Similar Species Discussion

Pinyon, Steller's, and scrub jays were on our feeders at almost the same time. We first heard the distinctive call of the Blue Jay, which we immediately recognized, and which caused us to look out in time to see him visit the feeder briefly, take a sunflower seed and fly off. The bird was unquestionably a Blue Jay, which surprised us as we haven't seen one in this area before. We saw the bird only this one time, even though we have been watching for a return visit.

Resources Used

None needed. The Blue Jay was unmistakeable.

Previous Experience

Very familiar with Blue Jays having recently moved to Colorado from previous homes in Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, where Blue Jays were very common at our feeders.
