Description of the Bird

Adult female. First noted robust, thick, long bill. The bill sloped up to the forehead, the forehead went upward  to a rather flat crown, different in shape than canvasback. Light white vertical line on face at base of bill. White spot on side of head. Otherwise chocolate/dark brown Plumage overall.Differed from white winged scoter by white vertical line rather than spot on front of face.  The bird never stretched its wings while I was there but no white was observed in wings as bird preened for a short time. Diving often and repeatedly. Did not associate with any other waterfowl. Very distant, not super clear photos but the facial markings show up.

im submitting this as it would be a first Teller County record.

Similar Species Discussion

Already noted difference from white-winged scoter and canvasback. Black scoter would not not the white markings on face of this bird And there was not yellow on base of bill. Bill shape, facial markings and coloration separated this bird from all other species.
