Description of the Bird

Found by Lorraine Lanning earlier on 2/20/2022. Refound by Will Anderson just before I arrived. It was perched on a wooden fencepost about 1/4 mile away when I arrived, but flew farther away just as I was getting my scope out of the car. It spent the rest of the time sitting on another wooden fencepost about 1/2 mile away. Occasionally preening. Stretched its neck out a couple of times. Also stared intently at possible movement to its right a couple of times.

Large white owl with dense black bars all over except a completely white face and black dots on the crown.

Similar Species Discussion

The only other species I considered was a very pale Ferruginous Hawk, but the extensive barring all over and the completely white rounder face eliminated that. Also this was a much bulkier bird.

Resources Used

Knowledge of the bird through general research and the Sibley's bird app.

Previous Experience

No experience with seeing this species before, but I've researched it extensively on the off-chance of seeing one. I've seen lots of other large birds of prey (Eagles, Hawks, Accipiters, large Owls, etc.)

2) No specific coordinates are available but the location is mappable.
3) A generic location with no specific coordinates is mapped to the center of the reported county.
