Description of the Bird

Mostly dark brown quite large bird that had a heron like body, but with a srcunched down look with no neck appearing. The bill was all black, quite short and thick. Eye color was reddish. The back was brown with relatively few white spots along the edge of the wing and the chest was also brown with only subtle streaks. The legs were a dull green.

Similar Species Discussion

Juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron was eliminated because of the all dark thick bill, no obvious chest streaks, and few white spots on the wings.

Resources Used

Sibley and National Geographic Field Guides.

Previous Experience

I see Black-crowned Night-Herons frequently, but have seen about 6 Yellow-crowned Night-Herons in Colorado, including a juvenile many years ago at Belmar Park in Lakewood.
