Habitat

On frozen lake. One lone cottonwood. Shrubby area

Viewing Conditions

Optics:  35X digital zoom and, Kowa TSN 773 Prominar spotting scope. 12X50 binoculars
Distance:  50 ft.
Light:  Very clear day

Description of the Bird

Very large white birds. 9 were observed sleeping on the ice until they finally lifted their heads and we were able to clearly see the bills with yellow by the eye.
Behaviors: Sleeping on the ice
Call: None heard
Plumage: Adult

Similar Species Discussion

We eliminated Trumpeter swan because of yellow by the eye, which was only seen briefly, but well by all of us.

Sibley guide to Birds, Peterson Guide. We were all taking turns referring to the guides and looking through the spotting scopes.

Additional Information

Comments: Due to size constrictions, the photos had to be cropped to such and extent that the 9th bird cannot be seen...as it was a few feet from the others.
