Lighting was indirect due to the location between houses.
Description of the Bird
Most distinctive characteristic was a wide rust-colored chest barred with white accents. Also notable was the thick rust-colored plumage half-way down the legs.
Behaviors: I first noticed the hawk from about 30 feet away while it was standing on a pidgeon carcass in a secluded spot between my house and the house next door. It remained motionless so I ran into the house, grabbed a still camera and came out my front which was just out of view. I stepped into view about 20 feet away and snapped some photos. The hawk seemed relatively unfazed and would feed and stand alert intermittently. I ran back into the house and got my video camera and took some hand-held video. The bird continued that same behavior, so I then got a tripod for the video camera and over an hour's worth of great footage before the hawk burst into flight with the carcass to a tree across the street.
Call: did not hear any vocalization
Plumage: slate blue above; barred rusty below
