Description of the Bird
Brenda Wright found the bird on the shore as it fed along the edge of the water. We were in boats which allowed us to get very close to the bird. Large shorebird, red legs, white belly, scaly two toned upper parts, dark brown neckless, and dark pointed bill. Wings were white underneath and patterned on top. Tail on top had a dark terminal band.
Similar Species Discussion
This species should not be confused with other species in Colorado. Black Turnstone and Surfbird are about the same size but have very different field marks and do not occur in Colorado.
Previous Experience
We have seen Ruddy Turnstones in over 20 countries over the last 30 years.
