Description of the Bird

Please see the photographs of the dead bird.  The specimen is in the possession of the Montrose office of the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Similar Species Discussion

Northern Saw-whet Owl--eliminated due to bill color, size, spotting on breast and head did not form a streaked pattern
Burrowing Owl--eliminated by long tail, facial pattern, spotting on breast didn't form a pattern of barring, and spotting on head
Northern Hawk Owl--eliminated by size, tail length.

Really, in hand, the identification didn't seem difficult
