Description of the Bird
Was completely white in front and along neck to area above eyes, black beak, dark green on top of head and back of neck. Body was solid brown, including the top of its back. Rear of bird was black with some white as in a Shoveler. Light was good, could see colors clearly. It was facing upstream and putting its head into the water to fish, not tipping upside down but just putting head into water, lifting out and repeating. Not feeding in the manner of a Shoveler. Was in a group of Shovelers, and after 10 min flew away down river with that group.
Did not see any other birds with these colors in the group.
Similar Species Discussion
Appeared to be some sort of Anas species, but not a Shoveler, not Mallard, not Pintail, not Wigeon. Same size as those birds, but none have this appearance. It's beak was dark like a Shoveler, but not as big, and it held its head up high, unlike a Shoveler and more like a Pintail.
Resources Used
unsuccessfully used Sibley, internet web sites
Previous Experience
Regularly watch ducks along South Platte and at local ponds and lakes. Very familar with the species usually seen in this area.
