Description of the Bird
Small yellowish-gray bird. Stark yellow spectacles and white iris, 2 white wing bars. Complicated song of nasaly whistles and chers. Gleaning activity in mid-story choke cherry.
Similar Species Discussion
The yellow-colored spectacles of the white-eyed vireo were distinctive for me. Plumbeous vireos are all gray with white spectacles. Cassin's vireos are not nearly as yellow-tummied as the white-eyed vireo and have white spectacles.
Resources Used
Memory (I had recently seen one with Bill Maynard at Chico Basin Ranch). Sibleys, Stokes.
Previous Experience
I am quite familiar with plumbeous, warbling and Cassin's vireos--sight and song. I observed a white-eyed vireo at short distance with Bill Maynard at Chico Basin Ranch in early May.
