Habitat

Dirt driveway, adjacent meadow, Open Pinyon Ponderosa forest. Mixed bird seed was spread on ground.

Description of the Bird

Definite quail shape. Light grey to brownish gray overall. Bushy topknot light in color. Fully scaled breast.
Behaviors: Foraging quail-like in dirt driveway and nearby grassy areas.
Call: Clucking sounds
Plumage: Adult

Similar Species Discussion

Very familiar with Bobwhite and California Quail, compared bird to other quail in Sibley Guide to Birds. Bird had a bushy tuft of feathers on head--distinctive to scaled quail.
