Description of the Bird

bird seen on pond with Ring-billed and Herring Gulls, ducks, and shorebirds, and then seen briefly in flight
larger than Ring-billed Gulls, smaller than Herring Gulls
gray mantle color similar to that of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls
small yellow bill with dark color towards the tip (consistent with third-cycle Kumlien's Gull)
hints of brownish color in upperwing coverts (also consistent with third-cycle Kumlien's Gull)
white head with no obvious streaking
iris color not discernible in cloudy conditions
folded primaries pale gray with white tips
very limited gray on primaries and white tail on bird in flight

Similar Species Discussion

Thayer's Gull would have much darker primaries.
Glaucous Gull would be larger, larger-billed, and with no gray on primaries.
