Description of the Bird

Bird was small, around 5 inches. Drab grayish olive overall.  Had bright yellow spectacles which COMPLETELY SURROUNDED THE EYE, and diagnostic WHITE IRIS. Whitish throat, pale yellow flanks, gray nape. Bill appeared thick, and slightly hooked, top of upper mandible appeared dark, bottom half of upper mandible and lower mandible appeared pale gray. Alternately very active and also sat and called repeatedly.  Call was tik-a-purrreer-chik.

Am reporting this bird even though it appears on the Huerfano County checklist AND CBRC states it is not necessary to report in Huerfano County...because I could find no records for White-eyed Vireo listed for Huerfano County

Similar Species Discussion

Eliminated all warblers, flycatchers  and other vireos due to distinct WHITE IRIS AND BOLD YELLOW SPECTACLES.

Resources Used

Sibley's, and calls from BirdTunes

Previous Experience

We have seen White-eyed Vireo several times in Central America. Are familiar with both them and Thick-billed Vireo. Familiar with typical warblers, kinglets and flycatchters in our area.
