Description of the Bird

I heard the unmistakable song as soon as I stepped outside into my backyard.  It was perched 20 feet from me.   I went back inside to get binos and camera (iphone).  It had flown into my neighbors yard, ~60' away.  Still easy to see with binos.  Very reddish color, white throat, dark bands on tail, and long bill.   I played the calls & song on the BirdsEye West Iphone Application and it flew back into my yard.  I recorded an 11 second video but it didn't sing.   I then watched/listened to it from my office window.  It was close by and singing and calling frequently from 11-12.  Heard it less and farther away from 1200-1:15-ish.

Similar Species Discussion

I heard it 1st and knew it was a canyon wren song.  Expected to see a mockingbird, but it was a canyon wren.  I played the song to double check that it was the same.  Compared to pictures of other wrens - distinguished from others by slightly larger size, reddish color, long bill, and barred tail.

Resources Used

The Sibley Guide to Birds, National Geographic field guide, Birds Eye West iphone app

Previous Experience

Been birding since 1991.  Really like all wrens, especially canyon wrens.  So, I always listen for them when I am in their typical habitat.  I recognized the song instantly.
