Description of the Bird
I first noted the gull standing on an area of flat ground close to, but not immediately near, area of dumping. It was obviously pallid compared to numerous other "brown" gulls nearby. The photos are accurate and give a better description than I can in words. Worth noting, in flight the wings appeared uniform (no secondary bar) except outermost primaries a bit darker than inner primaries, but similar in color to primary and secondary wing-coverts. The bird was smaller than surrounding gulls, including a THGU immature, with petite bill and head. Bird with very speckled appearance, the wing coverts being about 1/2 marked and 1/2 solid pale brown. The tail was solid, but pale, same color as wing-coverts and back. Rump appeared paler due to white barring mixed in with brown.
Similar Species Discussion
GWGU and other such beasts would be larger, larger-billed, etc.
Thayer's Gull or Thiceland Gull (which = Thayer's x Iceland or ??? variant Thayer's or variant Iceland ???):
This bird fits in well with mainstream Iceland (Kumlien's) Gull as determined by looking at photos in Howell and Dunn's "Gull Book" and by scanning pics from Canada's Maritime Provinces and New England. That P10 is distinctly paler than P9 and P8 argues against THGU as does lack of a distinct secondary bar. The smaller size also favors ICGU as does the pallid tail. Per Bruce Mactavish: "That looks like a middle of the road Kumlien’s Gull. It would totally blend in with the common folk in St. John’s." ... With Kumlien's Gull being common and Thayer's quite rare in NFLD
Resources Used
Howell and Dunn's Gull Book, sorting through photos on line. Mactavish's input was limited to quote provided
Previous Experience
Moderate with ICGU, extensive with THGU, GWGU. Modest with GWGU x GLGU.

Location Map
The marker on the map shows an approximation of the location of this report. The marker is generated using a prioritized Logic base:
1) If the observer has entered coordinates, they will be shown.
2) No specific coordinates are available but the location is mappable.
3) A generic location with no specific coordinates is mapped to the center of the reported county.
